3 SA Musical Acts that Found International Fame
Many South African musicians and recording artists dream of international recognition, and once they achieve it, they do not shy away from telling the world about where they are from.
Below are three South African musical acts that made it big on the international stage:
Die Antwoord
From Australia to Switzerland, there are few people left in the world who haven’t heard of Die Antwoord – Afrikaans for “The Answer”.
The electronic hip-hop duo of Watkin “Ninja” Tudor Jones and Yolandi Visser exploded onto the Cape Town music scene in the early 2010s with their hit single, “Enter the Ninja.”
Since then, they have wowed stadiums across the globe with their controversial, counterculture antics – what they call “Zef” style – and often hilarious stage presence.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
One of South Africa’s most internationally-known music groups hails from the small city of Ladysmith in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
They first achieved international notice when they sang on Paul Simon’s acclaimed album, “Graceland”, in 1986. The male choral group have since been active for over 60 years, having recorded over 50 albums and winning multiple awards, including five Grammys.
Seether
Founded in 1999 by Shaun Morgan in Pretoria, the alternative rock band changed their name from “Saron Gas” when they moved to the United States of America after Wind-Up Records gave them a record deal.
Their first major hit was “Fine Again” off their 2000 debut album, “Disclaimer”, after which they toured extensively to promote their music. Many critics faulted Morgan’s voice for sounding too similar to late Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain, but that hasn’t stopped Seether from finding fans all over the world.
