4 Nigerian Christmas Movies You Need to Watch

December 24, 2024

In just a few hours, we’ll be celebrating Christmas Day with our family and friends. Now is the perfect time to round up your loved ones, grab some chin chins and puff-puffs (with some wine to wash it down), and gather ‘round the TV for a classic Nollywood Christmas movie marathon!

Check out our top four festive-themed Nigerian flicks to enjoy on this beautiful Noel:

1. A Naija Christmas (2021)

Directed by Kunle Afolayan and written by Kemi Adesoye, “A Naija Christmas” centres around Mama Agatha, an ageing matriarch who wishes to see her sons married and having children before she passes. To motivate them, she offers her Ikoyi house as an inheritance to the first son who ties the knot.

Hailed as Netflix’s first Nigerian Christmas original, “A Naija Christmas” beautifully weaves themes of love, family and joyful spirit, making it a heartwarming choice for holiday viewing.

2. A Christmas Passion (2004)

For the hopeless romantics who want to find, well, hope this Christmas, then you’ll love this oldie-but-cheesy-goodie, “A Christmas Passion”.

Directed by Charles Novia, it tells the story of an engaged woman named Passion. After an accident leaves her with amnesia, her family mistakenly believes that the man who saved her – a restaurant server named Christmas – is actually her fiancé, Biodun. In truth, the real Biodun is away during this crisis, but Christmas is willing to keep up the pretence as Passion’s family spoils him.

What will happen when Biodun returns on Christmas Day to find Passion with another man? Watch “A Christmas Passion” to find out!

3. Christmas Is Coming (2017)

Directed, written by and starring Ufuoma McDermott, “Christmas Is Coming” is a comedy caper for the ages!

Five days before Christmas, a tomboy named Henri Atta has an important presentation to deliver at work. However, her flatmates decide to play a prank on her by giving her a makeover while she sleeps. With no time to reverse the changes, Henri must navigate her new appearance, the presentation, a difficult co-worker, and her boss, who suddenly finds himself attracted to her transformed look. Along the way, Henri discovers the true meaning of the holiday spirit.

If chaos mixed with heartwarming moments is your style, then “Christmas Is Coming” needs to be on your festive watchlist!

4. Christmas in Miami (2021)

For fans of comedian Ayo Makun’s antics, you’ll love the latest holiday-themed instalment in the “Akpos” franchise!

Directed by Robert Peters and produced by Makun, who also stars in the film, “Christmas in Miami” features an American real estate mogul who brings together six families from six different countries, including Akpos and his family from Nigeria. They will spend the week leading up to Christmas on a luxurious island, competing for a grand prize of $1 million.

Light-hearted and over the top, this flick also focuses on themes of families and cultural diversity, which we could all use a little more of during the festive season.
