A “Special Official” Funeral Declared for Joseph Shabalala
The late founder of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Joseph Shabalala, is set to be buried in a special official funeral.
The 78-year-old musician – who founded the vocal group in 1960, which has gone on to become a worldwide musical phenomenon – passed away at Eugene Marais Hospital in Pretoria on last Tuesday, 11 February.
He had apparently been suffering from back surgery-related complications, although this has not been confirmed as the cause of death.
In a statement released on Sunday, 16 February, President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his condolences to Shabalala’s family – as well to the members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo – before revealing the funeral preparations.
The statement added: “The Special Official Funeral Category 2 entails ceremonial elements provided by the South African Police Service.”
In addition, the South African flag will be flown at half-mast at every flag station in the country until Saturday evening, 22 February – Shabalala’s funeral is scheduled to take place on this date in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal.
The funeral will also be open to members of the public.
