Baleka! Dladla Mshunqisi Flees Police at #VulaPresident Protests
A video of Gqom artist, Dladla Mshunqisi, running from the police has been trending online, after things got out of control at an impromptu protest against the current South African coronavirus lockdown regulations.
On Wednesday, 2 September, the entertainment industry took to the streets of Durban in an illegal protest demanding that President Cyril Ramaphosa re-open the live events industry.
The protest gained momentum and caused a major traffic jam on the N3 Durban freeway, which prompted the intervention of the South African Police Services.
As the police were trying to disperse the crowd, Mshunqisi was captured on video fleeing the scene, leaving Mzansi in stitches over his running technique, and how fast he was going.
Mshunqisi, who is known for always shouting the word, “baleka”, which means “run” in his songs, was teased on Twitter that his shout could have created the perfect ambience for a hectic scene.
Another user said: “I’m disappointed, couldn’t Dladla Mshunqisi give us his renowned scream. Somer “baleeekaaaa!” nyana.”
Despite Mzansi finding the footage funny, Mshunqisi was left furious at the police’s response. He said: “We were not fighting them and we were not resisting but the police attacked us. We were sprayed with tear gas and rubber bullets were fired at us.”
He added: “At some point I fell on the ground and fainted. Someone must have poured water on me because when I gained my consciousness, I was wet. I could have easily died.”
