Popular musician John Zuya, known to many as John Mai Molo, has died under mysterious circumstances after eating allegedly poisoned food in Bauchi State, Nigeria.

The “Abar Matasa” singer – who is widely celebrated across northern Nigeria for his role in preserving traditional Bauchi music – had returned from Lagos last Thursday, 16 October, where he performed at several cultural events.

Shortly after his arrival, Zuya reportedly fell ill, collapsed, and was taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.

His close friend and collaborator Emma Wakili announced the news via Facebook on Saturday, 18 October, writing: “It is confirmed that John Zuya passed on this morning at 7:00 a.m. His body has been placed in the mortuary as we move forward with the investigation.”

In a second post, Wakili expressed his heartbreak, describing Zuya as “more than a friend, he was a brother.”

The sudden death of the beloved Bauchi musician has left fans and the northern Nigerian entertainment community in deep shock. Police investigations are underway.
