Black Coffee Builds New Homes for Eastern Cape Victims
Grammy-winning DJ Black Coffee is transforming flood recovery efforts in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, by replacing temporary relief with permanent infrastructure.
The Black Coffee Foundation confirmed it has moved beyond short-term relief to begin the first phase of a major housing project for families displaced by the 2024 floods.
Partnering with TenCo Foundation and ProRoof, the initiative is currently laying bricks and raising roofs to move residents out of temporary shelters like Northcrest Church Hall. For the deejay, who spent part of his youth in Mthatha, the mission is deeply personal.
“Building homes is about more than shelter; it’s about restoring dignity and hope,” Foundation CEO Lungie Maphumulo told a local publication on Thursday, 5 February. She added that the organisation aims to “rebuild homes, restore dignity, and invest in futures” as part of a broader 2026 social impact rollout.
Beyond housing, the foundation is funding a world-class music academy and continues to urge corporate partners to help scale these building efforts across the Eastern Cape. This work marks a significant shift in the artist’s legacy, proving that his commitment to South Africa remains as solid as the homes he is now constructing.
