Black Coffee Receives a Warm Welcome Home
Several politicians, along with Black Coffee’s fans, friends, and family gave the award-winning DJ a hero’s welcome home at O.R. Tambo airport on Tuesday, 5 April.
The internationally acclaimed artist – real name Nkosinathi Innocent Sizwe Maphumulo – flew South Africa’s flag very high when he became the first South African artist to win the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album on Sunday, 3 April.
Upon Maphumulo’s arrival at the Johannesburg airport – as soon as he walked through the international arrival doors, the crowd erupted in loud cheers for one of Mzansi’s music heroes in a grand style.
Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, welcomed him home and thanked him for representing the country abroad.
Mthethwa said: “Welcome home, my brother, son of the soil. You carried the hopes of the youth, you carried the hopes of old people, everyone across the board. Everyone celebrated because you won for SA as a whole.”
When Black Coffee received his award, he said: “I just want to say to all the kids that believe you can be anything in the world, despite your environment. It may sound cliché, but it is possible. All you have to do is be resilient and have faith.”
