Doja Cat and Father Feud on Social Media
Grammy-winning rapper Doja Cat’s first-ever South African performance has been overshadowed by a very public falling out with her estranged father, veteran Sarafina! actor Dumisani Dlamini.
Doja Cat, whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, performed at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria on 20 March as part of the Global Citizen Move Afrika Tour.
Ahead of the show, she posted a TikTok series titled “The Deadbeat Chronicles,” revealing that her father had declined her concert invitation, claiming she did not contact him enough.
In a display of the digital friction between them, she admitted to trolling him during the ticket process, sending him misleading links instead of a ticket portal.
Dlamini quickly responded with a different version of events. He claimed in a video that he actually did try to attend the show with paid tickets but was barred by her security and management.
He alleged, “I am going with all the security, they are kicking me out of the place. They are saying you are not allowed to come and see your daughter.”
Dlamini has previously blamed Doja’s mother, Deborah Sawyer, for the divide, asserting his integrity and stating, “I never left my kid.” He alleged Doja had been “brainwashed” by her mother, claiming Doja “came to South Africa, had the power to see me and faked it.”
Doja has previously spoken about her upbringing, saying: “Growing up with a single mother was a hard thing. She is incredible, the strongest mother. She taught me a lot of things.”
