Popular South African actress, Christine Basson, has passed away at the age of 78.

According to a Facebook post by her close friend, Reinet Louw Kemp, Basson – who celebrated her birthday on Sunday, 9 June – passed away early this Monday morning at the high care unit at Ekklesia Park retirement village in Johannesburg.

Kemp’s post reads: “Our beloved friend, Christine Basson – for many the strong motherly figure Nora Naude from Egoli – peacefully went home this morning. She will be missed.”

Fellow actress and mentee, Lizz Meiring, told a local radio station: “At the end of her days, [Basson] had struggled to breathe. She was not swallowing anymore … although it is an incredible tragedy for all of us who knew, loved and respected her, she now has rest.”

Basson starred in prolific television shows and films over the years, including “Konings”, “Die Mannheim-Sage” and “40 Days”.

However, she was best known to viewers as Nora Naude in the soap opera, “Egoli: Place of Gold”, a role which she played from 1992 until 2010.
