Emtee Arrested, Charged with Assault

March 10, 2023

Rapper Emtee has been charged with assault after turning himself over to the police.

According to reports, the “Abantu” hitmaker – real name Mthembeni Ndevu – handed himself over to the police on Wednesday, 8 March. He was charged with assault, taken to the Midrand Magistrates’ Court, and granted bail that same day.

Emtee’s arrest comes six days after hosting an Instagram Live session, during which his pregnant fiancee, Nicole Chinsamy, accused him of beating her on Valentine’s Day to the point of scarring her.

“This what you did to me,” Chinsamy is heard saying in the video as she holds up photographic evidence of her alleged beating. “Show them what you did to me, how you beat me up on Valentine’s Day.”

Emtee subsequently denied these allegations on Twitter. However, Women For Change – a non-profit organisation advocating against gender-based violence in South Africa – has since confirmed that it is assisting Chinsamy in laying charges against him.

“We have been speaking to Nicole’s family for weeks,” the organisation tweeted a day after the video went viral. “The current situation is extremely difficult and unsafe for Nicole and her family … Let’s not protect alleged abusers because they are loved celebrities. Nicole, we are proud of you for speaking up.”

It is not yet known when Emtee will appear in court.
