Ex-Miss SA Recovering from Neck Surgery

Former Miss South Africa, Suzette van der Merwe, is on her way to recovery after recently undergoing a surgical operation on her neck.

According to reports, the 50-year-old beauty queen – who won the prestigious title in 1990 – had been suffering from extreme pain since January.

She explained in a recent interview: “I woke up one morning in January with a muscle spasm in my left shoulder blade. I hoped a good massage would clear it up, but it just got worse. Later, the spasm spread into my neck, shoulder, arm, hand and even my left buttock.”

After hospital tests revealed that she had nerve damage, Van der Merwe underwent spinal neck surgery on Thursday, 9 May, at the Life Faerie Glen Hospital in Pretoria.

Sharing a gallery of post-surgery photos on her Instagram account, Van der Merwe wrote in the accompanying caption: “I’m so thankful to say I am pain-free after months of unhealthy, over-the-counter pain meds, and look forward to a quality life again.”
