Former “Idols SA” Winner Finally Paid Prize Money
No need to panic, folks – Yanga Sobetwa, last year’s “Idols SA” winner, has indeed received her R1 million cash prize for winning the competition.
The teenage songstress was crowned the winner of the competition’s 14th season in 2018, beating out runner-up Thato Makape.
However, according to a tweet published last Friday, 22 November, by entertainment commentator, Kgopolo Mphela, Sobetwa had yet to receive her R1 million cash prize.
Mphela wrote: “I just [received] confirmation from Mzansi Magic that Season 14 winner Yanga Sobetwa has not received her R1-million [sic] cash prize yet. I’ve been assured that the issue has been escalated and she will be paid soon.”
Before Twitter users could get their pitchforks out, Mphela then tweeted that Sobetwa deliberately chose to wait until she was 18 for the money to be transferred to her account.
He explained: “[Sobetwa] was 17 when she won … she didn’t want the money to go into her mom’s account. So Mzansi Magic had to wait till [sic] she is 18 so they can pay her directly.”
Sobetwa herself also confirmed in a tweet that the issue has been resolved.
