An embarrassing family fight broke out at Lebogang Khitsane’s memorial service on Sunday, 30 August, after his sister, Semati Moedi, publicly revealed that he died a bitter man after his wife allegedly brought a man into their matrimonial home.

The late business tycoon was well-known for creating stylish tombstones and statues for prominent South African personalities including Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, boxer Baby Jake Matlala and many more.

Khitsane’s funeral was broadcast live on national television. However, the event was interrupted when Moedi took the microphone and said: “Lebogang was in pain, it turns out his wife had brought a man into the house”.

Once she uttered those words all hell broke loose: a bottle of water was thrown at Moedi on the podium, then Khitsane’s daughter stood up to her aunt – the two women pushed each other and almost came to blows over the microphone.

The video went viral online and the word “Rakgadi” – which means aunt in Setswana – trended on Twitter. Twitter users had mixed reactions over the outburst, with some applauding “Rakgadi” for being honest, while others felt she was disrespectful to the deceased.

Now the man who once said he wanted to be remembered as “the Steve Jobs of tombstones”, will be remembered as an unhappy man, who died in pain over his wife’s infidelity.

Khitsane’s family confirmed that he will be buried on Tuesday morning, 1 September.
