Government Allegedly Paid Somizi R150K for Cookshow
Tourism Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, allegedly paid R150 000 of public money for a cook-off show with Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung, on Monday, 17 May.
The show was a publicity campaign meant to boost the country’s tourism and hype up the minister’s budget speech, which was delivered the following day on Tuesday, 18 May in the National Assembly.
eNCA’s investigative show, Checkpoint has released a video teaser of their upcoming episode, in which Somizi admits that he sent an invoice to the department and it was allegedly paid.
The journalist pushed hard to get the exact monetary figures out of Somizi’s mouth with no luck. The TV personality brushed off the “how much” question by saying “Ha! I don’t owe anyone that information …”
Somizi’s confession is contrary to what the Department of Tourism had told the public, claiming that the celebrity chef wasn’t paid for the show.
This controversial clip has gained much momentum on Twitter, with social media users believing that the event was unnecessary, especially taking into consideration state budget cuts.
