Idols SA Views Drop After Somizi’s Exit

September 15, 2021

It has been reported that South African singing competition, Idols SA, has lost almost 35% of its viewership, and that the decline might be caused by the suspension of Somizi Mhlongo.

On Sunday, 1 August, Mhlongo’s estranged husband, Mohale Motaung, accused him of domestic abuse – allegations which saw the Idols SA judge being removed from the show.

Following this announcement by M-Net, Somizi’s fans vowed not to watch the show again until he is reinstated.

In July, Idols SA reached a highwater-mark of 1 018 607 viewers, making it the fourth most-watched show on DStv during the month, however, in August the show’s ratings dropped to 693 000 – losing approximately 324 847 viewers.

M-Net has tried to save the show by adding a new guest judge weekly, but this trick doesn’t seem to have helped rescue the competition’s number of viewers.

Will the unprecedented decline of the show’s viewership force M-Net to bring back Somizi? Only time will tell.
