Ilano Leaves ‘Big Brother Mzansi’ After Making History

March 02, 2026

In a landmark season for South African reality television, Langelihle “Ilano” Gumede has officially exited the Big Brother Mzansi: Bazozwa house, concluding a journey that broke significant barriers.

As the franchise’s first-ever transgender contestant, the 23-year-old make-up artist and hairstylist from Durban leaves behind a legacy defined by both groundbreaking representation and immense personal resilience.

Ilano’s departure occurred during the live eviction show on Sunday, 1 March  after she failed to secure enough viewer votes to crack the Top 10.

Her time in the house was far from easy; she faced widely publicized transphobic remarks from fellow housemates Thandeka and Ramona, which led to Big Brother issuing formal strikes to the offenders following a massive social media outcry and a petition signed by nearly 30,000 viewers.

Despite these challenges, Ilano remained a vibrant powerhouse” known for what she calls her “queer fierceness” and impeccable style. Upon her exit, she expressed disappointment over a perceived lack of support from her female peers but left with her head high.

Her participation has been hailed by activists like Yaya Mavundla as a pivotal moment for LGBTQIA+ visibility, humanising the transgender experience for millions of viewers across the continent.

While her quest for the R2 million prize has ended, Ilano Sky has undeniably secured her place in South African pop culture history.
