“Isibaya” is Getting Cancelled

November 04, 2020

After seven years of gracing our television screens, “Isibaya” has seemingly been cancelled by Mzansi Magic.

The telenovela – which first aired on the DStv channel in 2013 – tells the story of two feuding families, the Zungus and the Ndlovus, that is set against the backdrop of the dangerously competitive taxi industry.

Although it has proven popular over the years, “Isibaya” has now been struggling to attract and retain daily television viewers – per information from Broadcast Research Council of South Africa, the show had less than 800 000 viewers in September.

According to a claim recently made by a source while speaking to a media outlet, the low viewership has prompted Mzansi Magic to not renew “Isibaya” for a ninth season.

The source explained: “The show’s creators are said to have tried to energise ratings by bringing back old and famous faces, but even this didn’t help … the channel asked the producers to come up with ways to improve the show and gave them a deadline to achieve this.”

An official announcement regarding the cancellation will be made in due course.
