February 23, 2026

The South African entertainment industry is in mourning following the sudden passing of veteran actor Webster Kutoane on Sunday, 22 February.

Best known for his compelling portrayal of “Vela” on the popular e.tv drama Isitha: The Enemy, Kutoane’s death has left a profound void among colleagues and fans alike.

The news was confirmed by the show’s production team and family representatives, though the exact cause of death has not been disclosed. The 61-year-old was a celebrated figure in local television, with a career that spanned decades and included memorable roles in various Mzansi productions, such as “The Black Door”, “Generations” and “Zabalaza”.

His latest performance in Isitha was widely praised for its depth, contributing significantly to the show’s high viewership ratings.

In a heartbroken statement, the production team expressed their shock: “Webster was more than a colleague; he was a giant in our industry whose humility and talent inspired everyone on set. We are devastated by this loss.”

Social media has been flooded with tributes from fellow stars and viewers, many describing him as a “consummate professional” and a “true storyteller.”

As the industry reflects on his legacy, funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later this week. Kutoane’s departure marks a sombre moment for South African arts, losing a performer who consistently championed authentic Mzansi narratives.
