Kwesta Comes Clean about Royalties Drama
Kwesta has acknowledged the fact that he still owes money to certain artists who contributed to his 2016 album, “DaKAR II”.
On Wednesday, 5 May, DJ Maphorisa took the rapper to task on Instagram Live, accusing him of not paying him a cent for his production work on the album, which included the breakout hip-hop single, “Ngudi’.”
DJ Maphorisa fumed: “After [Kwesta] made all these millions, why didn’t he come back to me and say ‘Grootman, here’s R20 000’ or something, like a token of appreciation?”
The next day, Kwesta attempted to address DJ Maphorisa’s allegations on Twitter – he explained that he was not involved in the financial side of RapLyf Records, which he started with Nota Baloyi and Leroy Khoza in 2013.
He wrote: “As success came … Difference of ideas, mismanagement of funds and many other things led to distrust. I’m guilty of some of these things and so are Nota and Leroy [sic].”
Although Sony Music Africa – RapLyf’s parent company – only recently paid him sales royalties from “DaKAR II”, Kwesta admitted that he “may owe some royalties to artists.”
It is currently unknown which other artists have yet to be compensated for working on the album.
