Lebo Mathosa Biopic: Kelly Khumalo Speaks Out
Kelly Khumalo has revealed why she is no longer playing the part of Lebo Mathosa in the upcoming biopic about the late pop singer.
The “Asine” hitmaker was slated to play the adult version of Mathosa in the six-part docu-series, “Dream: The Lebo Mathosa Story”, which will be released on 6 November.
However, Khumalo allegedly pulled out of the role over a salary dispute. Actress Keabetswe “KB” Motsilanyane has since replaced her.
In a recent interview with radio station, Metro FM, Khumalo shed light on her exit, which was due to the questionable quality of the working conditions on set – these included being exposed to dirty bathrooms.
Upon trying to raise these issues with the producers, she was branded a “diva”.
The songstress said: “I know my self-worth. I am at a point in my life where I have recognised the importance of representing myself the best way I can possibly do.”
Khumalo’s brand manager, Legend Manqele, agreed with his client’s sentiments: “[Khumalo] felt that working under these conditions was limiting her ability to honour the talented icon that was Lebo Mathosa and execute a sound performance.”
