Mark Pilgrim Restarts Chemotherapy Journey

March 16, 2022

Mark Pilgrim will be starting cancer treatment this week.

The 53-year-old South African radio personality, who hosted “The Mark Pilgrim Show” until yesterday, Tuesday 15 March, cancelled the gig as he would be undergoing chemotherapy the following day.

Pilgrim was diagnosed with stage three testicular cancer in 1988. The cancer was so aggressive that it spread to his lungs and kidneys, but after enduring nine months of chemotherapy, the disease went into remission.

Now, 33 years later, he announced via Twitter that he would be starting his battle against stage four lung cancer today, Wednesday 16 March.

Tweeting a photo of himself giving a thumbs-up, he said, “Getting my head in the game. Deepak Chopra said: ‘Believe the diagnosis, not the prognosis.’ I’m visualising [that] I’ve already won.”

Before hanging up his headphones, he resolutely said on air: “I’m not Chuck Norris. Yes, I’m scared. I am also strong. Both emotions run parallel with each other. I’m under the care of incredible doctors and surrounded by love.”

Pilgrim has survived several other health knocks in recent years: in July 2008, he suffered a severe heart attack in his doctor’s office, resulting in permanent damage to his heart. In June 2020, he contracted the coronavirus but eventually recovered.
