Media Star DJ Warras Killed in Suspected Property Hit
The tragic broad-daylight assassination of South African broadcaster Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, has laid bare the lethal dangers of Johannesburg’s hijacked building crisis.
The 40-year-old media personality was gunned down on Tuesday, 16 December, outside Zambesi House in Pretoria while overseeing security upgrades at the site.
Authorities believe the attack was a premeditated hit. Public Safety Member of the Mayoral Committee Dr Mgcini Tshwaku revealed that Stock held five protection orders against individuals who had previously threatened him.
“We believe that a price was put on his head because of the work that he was doing: trying to reclaim that building on behalf of the owner,” Tshwaku recently told reporters.
Stock, a father of three, was a household name through his work on Mzansi Magic and 5FM. His sister, Nicole Stock, shared the family’s devastation with a local publication: “I am in shock. I don’t have words. I am shattered.”
The Gauteng police are currently tracing three suspects who were seen fleeing on foot. No arrests have been made, though investigators are examining CCTV footage of the shooter.
The murder has sparked a national outcry, highlighting the violent syndicates profiting from the inner-city property decay.
