Metro FM Apologises to Miss SA
Radio station, Metro FM, has issued an apology over its controversial Twitter poll, in which they asked users to rate the newly-crowned Miss South Africa 2019, Zozibini Tunzi.
Tunzi – a 25-year-old public relations student from Tsolo, Eastern Cape – beat out 15 other finalists to win the prestigious pageant last Friday, 9 August.
The following day, Metro FM uploaded a poll to its Twitter account, asking users if Tunzi was “stunning”, “just ok [sic]” or “[the] wrong choice”.
In response, the station was slammed by angry users for questioning her beauty. The poll was deleted and replaced with a congratulatory message to Tunzi.
Soon afterwards, the station released a statement about the poll, which they branded as “unapproved content”.
The statement reads: “Metro FM does not stand for the content of this poll and distance ourselves from it. We consider this to be totally against our ethos and brand values.”
They directly apologised to Tunzi, who commented on the debacle: “I’d be more affected if someone said I wasn’t smart. Then I would have been hurt. But being pretty? I don’t really care and am not interested.”
