August 12, 2024

Mia Le Roux has made history by becoming the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa, following a dazzling ceremony at the Sun Bet Arena in Pretoria, Gauteng on Saturday,10 August.

The 28-year-old marketing manager, model and part-time student was diagnosed with profound hearing loss as a baby, but with the support of her community, she was able to receive a cochlear implant and undergo speech therapy.

Le Roux, originally from Sasolburg, Free State and raised in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape described her victory as a significant moment for those who feel excluded or different.

In her first radio interview after the big win, she acknowledged the challenges of communicating with hearing loss, but expressed her commitment to using her platform to advocate for inclusivity.

This year’s Miss South Africa competition was also dogged by controversy, with one finalist withdrawing after facing xenophobic backlash regarding her origins. Le Roux’s win, however, has outshone the negativity and has been celebrated as a breakthrough for diversity and inclusion.

Taking over from Natasha Joubert, Le Roux will represent South Africa on the global stage. She receives a R1 million cash prize, a luxury apartment, and the use of a Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé for a year.
