“Muvhango” Star Receives PhD
Actress Regina Nesengani has achieved a remarkable feat, thanks to her efforts to bring further awareness to gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa.
The 65-year-old actress – who is best known for portraying the character of Vho-Masindi in the popular soapie, “Muvhango” – has obtained a PhD degree in languages, linguistics and literature from the University of South Africa.
The news was revealed on Tuesday, 1 December, on the soapie’s official Facebook account.
Alongside a photo of Nesengani in ceremonial graduation attire, the caption read: “Her doctoral dissertation was on [GBV] and it was written in her native TshiVenda language … Ladies and Gentlemen [sic], we present to you Dr Nesengani.”
Speaking to a local publication, Nsengani explained that her thesis dealt with the portrayal of abuse against women through dialogue on drama books written by male writers.
She added that she “was also touched by many stories of women who were abused by their partners”, and hopes that her contribution will shed further light on their plight.
