Nadia Nakai Delays New Single in Support of GBV Shutdown
Nadia Nakai has opted to press pause on her latest music release, shifting the spotlight from the studio to the streets as South Africa rallies against gender-based violence.
The 35-year-old rapper was due to unveil her new track “Really” featuring Nasty C, on Friday, 21 November, but has moved the release to 28 November in solidarity with the nationwide Women for Change shutdown.
Explaining the decision on Instagram, she said: “We as women are not working on Friday, so the song will be released on November 28. I also cancelled my gigs on Friday. Enough’s enough.”
She also switched her profile photo to purple, echoing the colour adopted by thousands showing support for the movement.
The shutdown, timed ahead of the G20 Summit, calls on women to step back from all paid and unpaid labour to draw attention to the escalating crisis of violence in the country. Nakai’s choice has been widely praised, with many recognising it as a powerful use of influence in a moment demanding national reflection.
When “Really” finally drops, it will arrive not only as a new release but as a statement from an artist willing to trade airtime for advocacy.
