Nigerian Police Probe Death of Singer Destiny Boy
The Nigerian music industry is in mourning following the death of 22-year-old Afrofuji artist Destiny Boy on Sunday, 18 January.
Known for his viral Fuji-style covers of Afrobeats hits, the singer’s passing has triggered both a police investigation and significant social media controversy.
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that one suspect is in custody. The case is now being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Homicide Section. Despite the arrest, the artist’s family maintains his death was the result of a chronic condition known as “Ogu oru”, which caused severe seizures.
His mother, Saida, dismissed rumours of ritual involvement, explaining: “The sickness he battled with was ‘Ogu oru,’ causing him to have seizures. The sickness had almost run him mad.”
She noted that the family sought both medical and traditional aid, keeping the struggle private to protect his career.
However, fellow artist Ruger expressed frustration over the rapid burial, stating on X: “No autopsy, NOTHING!!!! We just have to accept that he’s dead.”
Destiny Boy, who recently became a father, is credited with bridging traditional Yoruba Fuji with modern sounds. Investigations remain ongoing.
