Pearl Thusi’s Netflix Tale Sparks Intrigue and Doubt

September 15, 2025

Pearl Thusi’s surprise appearance in Netflix’s new three-part documentary, “Beauty and the Bester”, has left viewers divided.

The series, which premiered last Friday, 12 September, delves into the crimes of convicted murderer Thabo Bester and his partner Dr Nandipha Magudumana, often dubbed “Mzansi’s Bonnie and Clyde”.

Thusi recounts how, in 2011, she was lured by Bester through Facebook under the guise of presenting an opportunity. She then describes being driven to a dead end, where he allegedly pulled a knife on her. In her recounting, she managed to escape by involving her pastor, who gave Bester a Bible as the police intervened.

Yet her contribution has not been met with universal praise. Some Twitter/X users questioned whether her story added any meaningful insight, with one commenting: “I do not think she should have featured. The story was not strong or deep enough.”

Others have highlighted inconsistencies between her 2013 account to a local publication and what she shared on the Netflix special, particularly around the knife said to have been recovered from her home.

For some, her inclusion added drama but for others, it raised more questions than answers.
