Rebecca Malope Honoured with Second Lifetime Music Award

South African gospel icon Dr Rebecca Malope will receive her second Lifetime Achievement Award of the year, this time from the 2025 Basadi in Music Awards.

Affectionately known as the “Queen of Gospel”, the 57-year-old singer was also honoured with a lifetime accolade at the Metro FM Awards in May, marking a momentous year in her illustrious three-decade career, with more than 36 albums and 10 million records sold.

In a heartfelt interview with a local publication on Sunday, 6 July, Malope said: “To still be seen and celebrated after so many years in this industry is a great blessing from God – one that I never take for granted.”

To further celebrate the occasion, she is designing her own gown for the ceremony, signalling a new chapter in her life that includes fashion design.

Hloni Modise, CEO of the Basadi in Music Awards, described the tribute as “essential”, saying that Malope’s music has “uplifted, healed, and given voice to untold emotions and faith.”

The glitzy awards ceremony will take place on 2 August at the Joburg Theatre in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
