SA Entertainment Industry in Mourning after 2 Stars Die
Two beloved South African actors have passed away in the space of four days.
Andile Gumbi – who was known for playing Zweli Ngubane on Mzansi Magic’s “Isibaya” – was working on a musical theatre production in Israel when he suffered a heart attack on Tuesday, 15 October.
Resuscitated but left in a coma, the 36-year-old actor sadly passed away on Friday, 25 October, at Shaare Zedek Medical Centre in Jerusalem.
Philly Khubheka, a co-ordinator for Mzansi Magic Publicity and EPG, confirmed the news in a statement: “[Gumbi] was very talented, with lots still to offer to the entertainment industry. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
That same day, yet another celebrated actor, Cobus Visser, was admitted to Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria after suffering heart failure.
Seventy-year-old Visser – whose credits include “Fiela se Kind” and “Mollie & Wors” – was reportedly in a semi-coma by Saturday. Come Monday morning, 28 October, he passed away.
His friend and colleague, Liz Meiring, confirmed the news on Facebook: “We’ve walked a long road together for 35 years. But [Visser] is freed. And that is all that matters.”
