SA Music Dominates in Spotify Wrapped
The annual Spotify Wrapped has landed, which has also marked a decisive victory for South African music after 2024’s tepid global recap.
The 2025 edition, praised for its engaging graphics and new features like “Wrapped Club”, thrilled users worldwide.
In South Africa, the results confirmed a major cultural shift: homegrown acts now make up 70% of the top ten streamed artists, a substantial rise from the previous year. Amapiano is the undisputed king, led by Kabza De Small, who amassed nearly 200 million streams, and Kelvin Momo, with over 71 million streams. The most popular streamed song was “Isaka (6am)” by CIZA.
This surge in local enthusiasm is driving global momentum. Pop sensation Tyla is spearheading this export, with her tracks occupying seven of the top ten slots for most-exported songs from the country.
As Spotify’s Sub-Saharan Head of Music, Phiona Okumu, noted: “Spotify remains committed to spotlighting the artists and scenes that are reshaping culture, from amapiano dance floors in Johannesburg to playlists in cities across the world.”
