SA Women Slam #MoonchildChallenge

Moonchild Sanelly is causing a frenzy on social media – but for all the wrong reasons.

On Monday, 16 September, the “Isthembu” hitmaker shared a video – in which she is seen wearing gold lace lingerie and twerking on a bed – on her Twitter account.

In the caption, Sanelly wrote: “#MOONCHILDCHALLENGE [sic]. Twerk on ur [sic] bed! Let’s go, boobeams! This is my everyday!!! [sic] … Let’s own our bodies and celebrate them by … ourselves!!!! [sic]”

However, the #MoonchildChallenge has received backlash from many women around South Africa – especially in light of the recent wave of femicide and acts of violence against women.

One female user wrote: “Ladies, don’t do the #MoonchildSanellyChallenge [because] your potential predator might be looking at his next target.”

Another user commented: “I think *We* [sic] women can do better. Yes, we need to liberate ourselves and our bodies, but i dont [sic] think this is the right way. This challenge is senseless.”

Sanelly has yet to comment publicly on the criticism towards her twerking challenge.
