Sho Madjozi Bags BET Award
Rapper Sho Madjozi made history on Sunday, 24 June, by becoming the first female South African artist to win a BET Award.
Beating out the likes of Nigeria’s Teniola Apata, Britain’s Headie One and Octavian, and France’s Jokair and Nesly, Madjozi clinched the award for Best New International Act at the 2019 BET Awards in Los Angeles, California. The winner of the award is decided by fans.
The “Huku” hitmaker’s win comes after she bagged awards for both Best Newcomer and Best Female Artist at the 25th South African Music Awards (SAMAs) earlier this month.
In her acceptance speech, an emotional Madjozi thanked her team, as well as her fellow nominees.
She added: “My story is [a] testament that you can come from any village, in any forgotten part of the world, and still be a superstar. For girls that come from where I am from, which is Limpopo, I just want to say that you don’t need to change who you are – you can still be big.”
