Singer Thami Shobede, 31, Dies

Former “Idols South Africa” contestant and musician, Thami Shobede, has died at the age of 31.

Shobede – who placed second in the singing competition’s twelfth season in 2016 – passed away on Thursday, 12 September, at Kalafong Hospital in Atteridgeville, Pretoria.

Reports say that the “Sthandwa” hitmaker had been admitted to the hospital after he collapsed during a performance on stage last weekend.

The cause of Shobede’s death is currently unknown, although a source close to the singer’s family claims that his organs had failed as a result of an illness, and that he had slipped into a coma earlier this week.

It is understood that Shobede’s family will release a formal statement regarding his death soon.

Condolences from around the country have poured in since Shobede’s death was announced,

“Idols South Africa” also paid tribute via Twitter: “We are saddened by the passing of [Shobede] … a very talented musician with lots still to offer to the music industry. Our deepest condolences to his family & [sic] friends. He will be greatly missed. #RIPThamiShobede.”
