“Skeem Saam” Star Arrested for Selling Cigarettes

Paul Mabu Sewetsi has been arrested on charges of selling illicit cigarettes at a taxi rank in Polokwane, Limpopo.

The 44-year-old actor – best known for his regular role as a pastor in the television soapie, “Skeem Saam” – was arrested along with four others by the civilian police force, the Hawks, on Wednesday morning, 8 July.

Per reports, 45 cartons of Remington Gold cigarettes – valued at R12 000 – were seized, ten of which were allegedly found on Sewetsi’s person.

Approximately R9 681 in cash money was also confiscated.

The sale of cigarettes is currently banned in South Africa, which is in the midst of a nationwide lockdown against the coronavirus.

After appearing in the Polokwane Magistrates Court on Thursday, 9 July, Sewetsi – along with two other suspects, Charles Kgomo and Jackson Ika – were granted bail after each posting R1 000. The other suspects, Portia Ndou and Brown Makumbe, remain in custody.

Sewetsi and his co-accused will appear in court again on 5 October.
