Somizi Mhlongo Out on Bail

April 15, 2020

Choreographer and entertainer, Somizi Mhlongo, is out on bail after he was arrested for allegedly spreading misinformation about the coronavirus.

Last Thursday, 9 April, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the national lockdown – put in place as a protective measure against the pandemic – would be extended to the end of April.

In an Instagram video broadcasted hours before Ramaphosa’s announcement, Mhlongo jokingly claimed that Fikile Mbalula – the current minister of transport – told him beforehand that the extension was coming.

Mbalula denied the allegations – although the entertainer subsequently apologised for his joke, the minister immediately laid charges against him.

According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Vish Naidoo, Mhlongo reported to the Sandton police station over the weekend, where he was charged with breaching disaster-management regulations.

He was then released on R1 500 bail, and is expected to appear in court at a date that has yet to be scheduled.
