Somizi Mhlongo Skips Zimbabwe for Namibia

November 05, 2021

Zimbabwe’s loss is Namibia’s gain after Somizi Mhlongo cancelled an appearance in the former for another gig in the latter.

The 48-year-old media personality was scheduled to appear as a guest chef at the opening of a Zimbabwean restaurant on Thursday, 4 November. However, the Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe petitioned the government to keep him from entering the country on the basis of his homosexuality.

Homosexuality is illegal in the conservative southern African nation.

In response, Mhlongo expressed his disappointment about the cancellation in an Instagram video, while also claiming that he did not “want to be [in Zimbabwe] anyway.”

Hours later, though, he hopped onto Instagram again to reveal that he was now heading to Namibia: “I am going to Namibia, I’ve got a gig tonight, they just booked me. Did a [COVID-19] test and I am going.”

Throughout the night, Mhlongo posted highlights from the gig, which included being ushered in by motorbikes at the gig’s venue, and hyping up a crowd before a performance by South Africa’s own DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small.

Way to keep up the hustle, Somgaga!
