Stars Shine at 2024 Africa Movie Academy Awards

The 20th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) saw Nigeria’s film industry shining brightly, with major wins for “The Weekend” and “Jagun Jagun”.

Held in Lagos, Nigeria, on Saturday, 2 November, the ceremony brought together African cinema’s finest, under the glamorous hosting of Segun Arinze and Ghanaian actress Joselyn Dumas, with performances by Afrobeat icon Femi Kuti.

Daniel Oriahi’s film, “The Weekend”, took centre stage, winning the prestigious Best Film for both Nigeria and Africa, as well as accolades for Best Screenplay and Cinematography.

Meanwhile, “Jagun Jagun”, led by actor Femi Adebayo, claimed three awards. Adebayo was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his role in the historical thriller, which also won for Visual Effects and Make-up.

Elsie Abang was honoured as Best Supporting Actress for her work in “KIPKEMBOI”, while young Nigerian talent Michell Lemuya won Best Young Promising Actor for “NAWI”.

The event also celebrated cinematic legends with Lifetime Achievement Awards for filmmakers including Souleymane Cissé and Haile Gerima. With such accomplishments, Nigerian cinema demonstrated its growing influence in African storytelling, grabbing the limelight on the global stage.
