Thando Thabethe: Why I Quit 5FM
Former 5FM deejay, Thando Thabethe, has spoken out about why she recently decided to leave the radio station.
According to a thread posted to her social media account on Tuesday night, 8 April, Thabethe claims that she was originally told that her show would be renewed. She then tried to negotiate a raise of R200 per hour, as well as a few weeks leave to work on other projects.
A week later, the radio personality and actress says that she found out that her popular afternoon show was suddenly being cancelled because it did not “fit into SABC’s two-to -five-year plan”.
According to Thabethe, 5FM’s management were told that she “demanded” an increase, as well as six weeks’ leave.
The former “Thabooty Drive” host claims that she had to hear this news through colleagues, and was “the last” to find out that her own show had been cancelled.
Then, 5FM apparently offered Thabethe a show slot on a Sunday morning, which she was not interested in.
She said: “I have ploughed many hours into the work that I do, and found this an insult after 11 years on radio. I then proceeded to resign. The current line-up at 5FM is not a representation of the diverse country that we live in. It’s also very easy to dub me as ‘demanding’ to the powers that be in the hope that the truth doesn’t come out.”
