The “Financial Woes” of Vusi Thanda
Actor Vusi Thanda is receiving major backlash from Mzansi after asking for financial support, as many try to decide whether or not his request is justified.
Last Thursday, 22 September, the 71-year-old shared a video on Facebook – via his friend Nozuko MaRhadebe’s account – asking for assistance in paying off his R45 000 debt to his landlord. In response, R100 000 was reportedly given in donations from the public.
However, the former “Emzini Wezinsizwa” actor says that not everyone was happy with the help that was given. In an interview with a local publication on Monday, 26 September, Thanda revealed that he had received a lot of criticism for asking for help and was “scared to talk now.”
“I used to receive royalties from the SABC. But they stopped and I don’t know why. All attempts to get clarity failed,” he added.
However, Gugu Ntuli – an executive of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) – issued a statement via a different media outlet on Tuesday, 27 September.
Ntuli said that she “can confirm that our records show that we are up to date with submitted payments for repeat fees”, before adding that they “empathise with the plight of Mr Thanda.”
