Tiwa Savage Rejects ‘Queen of Afrobeats’ Title
Tiwa Savage has made it clear that she is not comfortable with being hailed as the “Queen of Afrobeats”.
In a recent interview with online personality, Ebro, the 45-year-old singer admitted that although the title is often used to describe her, she feels it places an unnecessary burden on her and does not fairly acknowledge other women in the genre.
“Yeah, they call me the ‘Queen of Afrobeats’, but there are a lot of us that are queens,” she explained.
Savage – who rose to fame with hits such as “Kele Kele Love” in 2010 – acknowledged that her early success may have contributed to the tag. However, she insists the recognition should be shared with fellow female artists who have also shaped Afrobeats, including global stars like Tems and Ayra Starr.
She added that accepting the label would force her to constantly display humility, something she finds “uncomfortable”.
Despite her reservations, Savage’s influence remains undeniable. As one of the first African women signed to Universal Music Group, she has navigated challenges and setbacks to become a driving force in bringing Afrobeats to a worldwide audience.
