“Top Billing” Bows Out after 23 Years

October 18, 2019

After 23 years of gracing our television screens with all its glitz and glamour, “Top Billing” has been cancelled by the cash-strapped SABC.

The popular lifestyle programme – which was created by Basetsana Kumalo and Patience Stevens, and has aired on SABC3 since 1996 – is primed to air its final episode this Saturday, 19 October.

Over its 23-year history, “Top Billing” gave viewers a glimpse into the lives of South Africa’s rich and famous. It also showcased content that centred around fashion, decor and travel, as well as offered interviews with local and international celebrities.

Per reports, however, the SABC chose not to renew the show’s contract in June this year because it was “expensive” to make, specifically the international shoots.

Kumalo said in a recently released statement: “We trust that the show has served audiences by inspiring them to dream big, embrace their inner creative genius and dare to live the life they deserve … thank you for the journey, and the journey of Hope [sic] continues.”

Repeats of “Top Billing” will reportedly be shown on SABC3 until March 2020.
