Tyla faces lawsuit over royalties for hit single ‘Water’
South African star Tyla is embroiled in a legal dispute over royalties and producer credits for her Grammy-winning global hit, “Water”.
California-based producers Olmo Zucca and Jackson LoMastro have filed a lawsuit against the 23-year-old songstress, her British producer Sammy SoSo (real name Samuel Awuku), and Sony Music Entertainment.
The pair claim that they are “co-composers and co-authors” of the 2023 track, in addition to making significant creative contributions, from instrumental parts to melodic elements, during recording sessions in Los Angeles, California.
The lawsuit alleges Awuku took sole production credit and signed an exclusive deal with Tyla, without informing the other parties. Zucca and LoMastro argue that being excluded from being credited has harmed their careers and deprived them of opportunities.
The pair are seeking official producer recognition, retroactive and future royalties, and a fairer share of publishing income.
The track has been a global success, earning Platinum certification in the United States, topping charts worldwide and surpassing a billion streams on Spotify.
Although Tyla is named as a defendant, the complaint does not accuse her of wrongdoing, and she has yet to comment publicly on the matter.
