Tyla Grants Matriculant’s Dream with Surprise Dance

South African music sensation Tyla gave one lucky fan a night to remember when she made a surprise appearance at his matric dance.

Eighteen-year-old Mollwane “Mo” Madiba took to TikTok in February with a heartfelt video, in which he invited the Grammy winner to be his date, using the hashtag #MOandTYLAForMD.

The post quickly went viral, gaining the support of national radio station 5FM, who championed the campaign. Although Tyla initially declined due to a hectic schedule, she secretly arranged to attend the event at St Stithians Boys’ College in Johannesburg, Gauteng.

On the night of Friday, 27 June, just as Tyla’s new track “Is it” played through the venue, she walked in, leaving Mo and his peers stunned. The two shared a dance and even sang together on the dance floor.

“I was literally dateless BECAUSE I asked Tyla … and then Tyla pulled through!” Mo exclaimed. “She said, ‘Come, we’re singing!’, and shouted, ‘Mollwane and Tyla for MD!’”

5FM later announced a new initiative, #5FMPROMPOSAL, encouraging more students to dream big. For Mo, it was a night where music, magic and one bold ask turned into a moment he’ll never forget.
