Tyla Makes History with Second African Music Grammy
South African sensation Tyla has secured her place in music history at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, 1 February.
The 24-year-old singer won the Best African Music Performance category for her track “PUSH 2 START,” marking her second consecutive victory in this field following her 2024 success with “Water”.
The Johannesburg-born star triumphed over a competitive shortlist of industry heavyweights, including Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and Davido. Despite missing her official moment on stage due to a late arrival, Tyla celebrated with her team in the lobby of Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, before appearing on the red carpet in an archival Dsquared2 gown.
While speaking to an international publication about the frantic discovery of her win, Tyla remarked: “The way I found out is actually insane…. I did not make it, I was like two minutes late. So, I found out in the lobby.”
During the evening, she also confirmed that her second studio album, “A-Pop”, is scheduled for a summer release. While Nigerian fans faced disappointment as their stars missed out on contemporary awards, the night remained a landmark for South African talent, further bolstered by Trevor Noah hosting the ceremony for the final time.
