October 09, 2025

South African superstar Tyla has reached a historic milestone as her Grammy-winning single, “Water”, surpassed 1.2 billion streams on Spotify, making her the first solo female African artist to achieve this feat.

Released in July 2023, the amapiano-R&B fusion became a viral sensation, thanks to the #TylaWaterChallenge, and catapulted the 23-year-old singer to global fame.

The song earned her a Grammy Award for “Best African Music Performance” in February 2024, further solidifying her position as one of South Africa’s most influential musical exports.

Fans and commentators have also been curious about Tyla’s potential earnings. After she first reached one billion streams, musician Heart Beats went viral on TikTok for estimating her Spotify royalties using artificial intelligence, suggesting she could have earned between $3 million and $5 million from streams alone.

“She’s got money,” he quipped in response to astonished fans.

Now certified quadruple platinum in South Africa, “Water” continues to make waves globally. As Tyla prepares for her Indian debut later this year, her record-breaking success proves that South African music can truly move the world.
