Zozibini Tunzi: From Miss SA to Miss Universe
Miss South Africa, Zozibini Tunzi, has done her country proud after she was crowned Miss Universe 2019 on Sunday evening, 8 December, at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia.
The 26-year-old public relations student from Tsolo, Eastern Cape, beat out Puerto Rico’s Madison Anderson and Mexico’s Sofia Aragon to win the prestigious, 68th annual pageant.
A passionate activist who has pledged to fight against gender-based violence, Tunzi is also known for promoting female empowerment, and “fair representation of any shape and form.”
She highlighted her stance at the pageant: “I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me … was never considered to be beautiful, and I think that it is time that it stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face, and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine.”
Succeeding Catriona Gray of the Philippines, Tunzi is the third South African to take the Miss Universe crown – the first being Margaret Gardiner in 1978, followed by Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters in 2017.
Long live Miss Universe 2019!
