Broadcaster Melanie “Mel” Bala and her ex-husband, Zwai Bala, recently hosted an umgidi – a cherished time when a boy returns from the mountain – for their son, Sean, to honour his completion of the initiation process.

The ceremony, held on Thursday, 26 December, in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, brought together family, friends and industry colleagues. The 51-year-old television personality shared the occasion via Instagram post.

Dressed in traditional isiXhosa attire, Mel and Zwai demonstrated their dedication to co-parenting, while she explained in the caption that their success was thanks to their desire to “always put our children first.”

Reflecting on the event, Mel expressed gratitude to Zwai for guiding her through the process and ensuring their son’s safe return.

The event highlighted the significance of Xhosa customs, but also sparked controversy online for the faux pas of radio personality, Unathi Nkayi, drinking traditional beer from a men’s bucket, which some deemed culturally inappropriate.

However, the online grumblings didn’t ruin the festivities and Mel also thanked Sean’s aunt, Pinky Bala, for her pivotal role in organizing the celebration. The guests included broadcaster Nothemba Madumo and Zwai’s fellow TKZee star, Kabelo Mabalane.

Despite their separation since 2017 – after a decade of marriage – the glowing parents continue to prioritize family unity, demonstrating the power of collaboration in honoring cultural milestones.
