Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Charlize Theron vs 44 Afrikaners
Afrikaans-speaking South Africans are in their feelings after Benoni’s own Charlize Theron called her mother tongue a dead language.
Appearing on episode 123 of the “SmartLess” podcast, which was posted on Monday, 14 November, Theron told hosts Sean Hayes, Will Arnett and Jason Bateman that she “didn’t speak English until I was like 19” when she moved to the United States.
Regarding Afrikaans, the 47-year-old actress had this to say: “There’s about 44 people still speaking it. It’s definitely a dying language; it’s not a very helpful language.”
Almost immediately, Twitter was flooded with Afrikaans-speaking users, and we can tell there were more than 44 people who were extremely pressed about Theron’s remarks/language assassination.
Many mocked her:
Some peeps found humour in the entire situation:
Others agreed with Theron, which caused some flame wars:
If anything, folks, Theron won’t be invited to the next family braai anytime soon …
