Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Cindy Makhathini Crashes SUV into Petrol Station

September 29, 2025

Social media influencer Cindy Makhathini is safe and sound – and still in shock – after she was involved in a car crash on Saturday night, 27 September.

According to reports, Makhathini, after a six-hour drive from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, crashed her Omoda SUV into a Sasol garage’s convenience store in Roodepoort, Gauteng.

Footage of the aftermath shows the 26-year-old influencer beside the vehicle inside the store, as petrol attendants and passersby mill around the crash scene:

Makhathini confirmed the incident and shared photos of the crash in an Instagram Reel:

Makhathini wrote that “no one was hurt” and that her car was “just scratched, but the damage I caused to the garage is too much.”

She continued: “I am so lucky the owner was so kind and gentle with the situation.”

Makhathini also denied being under the influence, stating that she had passed a breathalyser test. She also indicated that a baby was present in the vehicle.

“I was not drunk. We were driving with a baby in the car, and it was a long distance … The police did a breathalyser test, and there was no alcohol in my blood. It was just an honest mistake,” she wrote.

For what it’s worth, eyewitnesses say that the crash occurred when the SUV moved towards the store, as if it was in first gear and the handbrake was disengaged.

The incident has caused widespread discussion online, including Twitter/X, where some folks showed off their snarky side:

It also sparked some back-and-forth comments (some slightly racist) on the make of her SUV:

A few tweeps were sympathetic:

Meanwhile, others were still trying to understand how and why this happened:

Makhathini, who is co-operating with the police on the matter, promised she will release more details once everything has “calmed down.”

Until then, enjoy (or ignore) the Twitter/X timelines going mad over the incident.
